Yuta Matsumura & Early World
Efficient Space + Cease and Desist present a long-overdue Melbourne performance of Yuta Matsumura’s Red Ribbon at the Grace Darling on Sunday 21 June. Also known for work with The Lewers, Th Blisks, Keanu Nelson + a litany of other projects, the lauded solo LP of hypnagogic art rock + crawl-space chamber-pop was released via Low Company in 2022. Matsumura is joined by album collaborators Laurence Quinn, Maeve Parker + Haruka Sato, alongside Matthew Spisbah, to realise this sideways suite live.
Support comes from Early World, a new project by Francis Plagne + Mary MacDougall. Tender pop music bent out of shape through strange harmonies, puzzling production choices + touches of absurdity, with James Rushford joining on keys.
Plagne’s catalogue stretches across labels including Horn of Plenty, Black Truffle, Kye Records, Penultimate Press + his own Mould Museum imprint. MacDougall has released recordings with MP Hopkins as Warm Currency on Horn of Plenty, + alongside Hopkins + Christopher Schueler as The Bowles on Kye Records.
